Your Trusted Bill Review Partner

It's possible to have both a competent legal team and someone to hold them accountable.
Why Empirical ?
Legal spend management, the process of reviewing, tracking, analyzing, and reporting outside legal costs, has garnered a substantial backing in the last 20 years, due to a growing trend of inflated billing by outside legal counsel. A common misconception about hiring a legal team is that lawyers are just "expensive" and while this may be the case, you may be overpaying by up to 33%. Estimates of inflated legal billing run from 21% to over 33%, depending on the research methodology. A separate study, according to a State Bar Arbitration advisory, found that most legal bills are inflated by at least 10-30%.
While hiring a competent legal firm to manage the stressors of your legal obligations is important, addressing overbilling by lawyers is an equally critical step. Fostering a healthy balance of value added legal representation with realized legal spend savings is our goal.
Requiring zero upfront costs, Empirical Bill Review brings outside counsel spend analysis and auditing done by U.S. based licensed attorneys. We average savings of 15.8% of the invoice amount, while charging only 2.5% of the invoice reviewed.

Our Process
Step 1: Proof of Concept
Empirical offers a proof of concept review, in which we invite you to provide a sample legal bill and we audit against an industry-standard set of Outside Counsel Billing Guidelines (“OCGs”).
Step 2: Onboard
Once the savings are realized from the proof of concept audit, we negotiate and tailor a set of OCGs for your enterprise and outside counsel.
Step 3: Establishing Outside Counsel Guidelines
Drafting and negotiating OCGs is a critical step in your legal spend management, setting parameters for your outside legal counsel. OCGs have become a staple in working relationships between law firms and their corporate clients. The purpose of OCGs is to set boundaries and expectations for your outside counsel, generally encompassing topics like; conduct, staffing, fee structures as well as delineating billable/non-billable tasks.
Step 4: Integrate Outside Counsel
Once the OCGs have been established and agreed upon, the Empirical onboarding team will work with your firms to develop the pipeline for bill submissions, timelines for auditing and appeals, as well as issuing payment at the resolution of audit and appeal process. Our legal team, of U.S.-based, licensed attorneys, expertly handles invoice discussions with your outside counsel, ensuring seamless agreement on final bills.
Step 5: Savings Begin
Empirical uses the agreed upon OCGs as a basis for our review. Our team of licensed, U.S.-based attorneys leverage their legal expertise and auditing experience to analyze your legal bills to achieve value added savings while maintaining a healthy working relationship with your outside counsel.
